Masks & public health

Updated 2023-10-30
Nobody likes masks. We don't enjoy BSDCan looking like a scene out of the latest Michael Crichton thriller.
However, BSDCan is about community, a community protects its most vulnerable members, and we have many vulnerable members. So, we are requiring that attendees wear masks (details below).
Finding a mask that fits your face snugly and comfortably before arriving in Ottawa can make wearing a mask during the conference much less aggravating.

BSDCan DOES require to you wear a mask:

  • in the conference venues (except for food/drink, see below),
  • that is well-fitted, and worn properly, covering both mouth and nose,
  • and that meets international medical and/or scientific standards:
       • meets N95, KN95, KF94, FFP2, PM2.5, or equivalent, and
       • no exhalation vent.
  • ...that's it.
  • BSDCan does NOT require to you wear a mask:

    • outdoors
    • outside the conference venues
    • during the closing social event (which is well-ventilated and open to the outside)
    • while you are the speaker/presenter
    • for the brief moment required to take a drink
    • while you are actively eating, if you are appropriately spaced out from other attendees

If you have questions about this policy, please contact us before booking flights and hotels.

If you are unable to wear a mask, we deeply regret excluding you this year. We hope you can participate remotely via the streaming options.
