BGP Tutorial

This tutorial will introduce the main concepts on BGP, and will guide the participants through configuring BGP Sessions using OpenBGPd on OpenBSD and Bird on FreeBSD. More in detail, the tutorial includes:

  • Introduction to BGP;
  • Exercise: Configuring a basic BGP Session;
  • iBGP and eBGP;
  • Exercise: Configuring iBGP between 3 routers;
  • Basic Filtering concepts;
  • Exercise: Setting up filters;
  • Basic Traffic engineering concepts;
  • Exercise: Set up traffic engineering;
  • Peering and interconnection;
  • Exercise: Set up internet exchange peering sessions;
  • Routing Security basics and RPKI;
  • Exercise: Install and configure relying party software (rpki-client, routinator and fort)
  • Exercise: Setting up Route Origin Validation and other routing security concepts
  • Closing remarks

At the end of the tutorial, participants will have a good understanding of how BGP Works, and how to configure it on OpenBGPd and Bird.
