OpenMoko

The Open-Source Cell Phone

OpenMoko is a project to make a complete open-source cell phone / PDA / do-it-all pocket computer.

OpenMoko.com sells preliminary hardware as the reference platform for this software, the Neo cell phone. The device runs Linux, although FreeBSD and NetBSD have been shown on it experimentally. The official software stack is written in C using GTK; there are several alternate software stacks including QTopia, Android and Java/FX. This talk will look inside the hardware, the software, and a couple of typical applications, as well as discuss the technology (and financial) prospects for the next few years.
